FAMILY TRAUMA INTERVENTION PROGRAM
(Formerly Family Violence Program)
The Family Trauma Intervention Program (FTIP) is a home and agency-based program providing a wide array of services for children and families who have experienced some sort of trauma and/or have been impacted by domestic violence. The program has been designed to help parents cope with the challenges of parenthood as well as to address the issues of trauma and/or loss. FTIP staff is cross-trained in the areas of trauma and domestic violence and is currently the only home-based program which provides counseling services specific to children impacted by domestic violence. Services include, but are not limited to: supportive counseling (individual, family and group) for non-offending parents and their children, crisis intervention, parenting skills training, advocacy, information, and referral services. Additionally, staff is available to provide community education workshops/trainings.
PROGRAM GOALS
- Decrease the potential for negative outcomes as a result of being a direct victim or victim witness to domestic violence.
- Increase parents' understanding of, and the ability to deal effectively with, the consequences of domestic violence for themselves and their children.
- Improve the self-esteem of the non-offending adult caregiver.
- Assist parents with obtaining resources which will enable them to become more effective parents and keep their children safe.
SERVICES PROVIDED
- Outreach services including the distribution of a free, easy-to-understand information packet which addresses the impact of domestic violence on children.
- Home-based services including individual/family counseling, crisis intervention, support, and advocacy.
- Agency-based groups:
Hearts and Homes - Theraputic groups for children who have witnessed violence in their homes.
Hearts and Homes in Harmony - Adult eduction groups for non-offending parents. The parent groups offer education on the impact of domestic violence on children. In addition, the groups educate parents on ways to offer constant and consistent support to their children after exposure to violence. Education is inclusive of the parents' own self care. - Community education
DURATION OF SERVICES
Services are typically provided for six months to a year. However, how services are provided is determined by the needs of the family.
REFERRAL PROCESS
Services are available to families who live in the Monroe County area. All services are voluntary and free of charge. Referrals are made by calling the agency at 325-6101.
