Teen-Age Parent Support Services
SUPPORT ~ PARENTING ~ GROUPS ~ JOB READINESS
SUPPORT:
TAPSS offers intensive, long-term case management to young mothers age 13 - 21 and fathers ages 13 – 25. Services are home based and case managers work to address issues such as housing, healthcare, education, employment and parenting. Building positive, trusting relationships with youth is the priority of our staff as well as helping move teen parents toward positive changes for themselves and their children.
PARENTING:
Case managers provide routine feedback and information to young parents within the context of home visits. The TAPSS program also offers PAT (Parents As Teachers – a nationally recognized model for successful parenting) services to young parents that are interested. This involves monthly home visits with a social worker trained in the curriculum to educate parents as to what they can expect from their child each month based on their age. Parents are equipped with home activities to do with their children to promote their child’s development. Referrals are also made to the agency’s parenting class; The Incredible Years which is a 13-week program geared for parents of children 2 to 8 years old.
GROUPS:
Support, socialization, education and community service are all components of the TAPSS group which is a non-mandatory piece of the program. Groups are offered throughout the school year on a weekly basis and are open to both young women and young men. Youth benefit from meeting and hearing from individuals in the community on topics such as healthy relationships, family planning and managing money. Childcare and transportation are provided free of charge to youth in the program. Educational tutoring is also provided on a weekly basis for youth that are pursuing their high school diploma, GED or college degree.
JOB READINESS:
TAPSS is committed to empowering youth to become self-sufficient and self-confident through obtaining and maintaining employment. Youth of all ages are invited to attend job workshops held throughout the year. Through our collaboration with other local businesses, youth also have the option to begin paid internship experiences when they are ready to begin working.
